Anyone remember wash days in days gone by? The brick copper boiling the water, the wash tub and posher, the mangle turning the handle for the rollers to squeeze out the water. It was hard work which usually took up the whole of Monday. Make-do leftovers for dinner, usually followed by rice pudding cooked in the range. Blissful memories for some of us, others will wonder what this is all about.
Ponder no more; pay a visit to the Gainsborough Heritage Centre and find out what this is all about. A blissful trip back in time to a grandparents’ 1950s sitting room awaits, and then walk the tiny street and pop your head into shops. Let the younger generations see what life was like way back then.
Learn about Marshall’s, Roses and other industries when Gainsborough was a thriving industrial town. Soak up the memories and get the feel of what it was like in days gone by. The cost to look round is just £3.00, and free for children accompanied by an adult. A fun quiz for the young ones to fill in, and costumes to try on can also be part of your visit.
The centre is disability friendly with toilets and lift to all floors. The shop stocks the latest books penned by the Association’s talented chairman and volunteers plus other gifts and memorabilia, and the cosy café sells light refreshments and delicious homemade cake. The top floor has a mass of files containing information, photos of streets, schools and workplaces and helpful members of the team are on hand to answer any questions you might have. So what are you waiting for? The centre is open Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10.00am to 4.00pm and situated on the corner of North Street, DN21 2HS.
