Group visits are proving to be ever popular with schools and groups enjoying visits to Gainsborough Heritage Centre. Groups enjoy not only a nostalgic tour around a building jam-packed with artefacts from days gone by, but can also relax with a drink and a slice of delicious homemade cake in the cosy Exchange Café. Dedicated volunteer Susan Edlington is currently working on a book about Lea Road School and is appealing for anyone who has any old photos or memories.
Lea Road School opened in May 1906 – a stunning red brick Edwardian building which closed in 1993 and now, sadly, stands empty and decaying. If you have any stories you would like to share please contact Susan on Susan@sandsedlington.com or 01427 848375, or pop into the Centre.
The Centre is open on Saturdays and Tuesdays, 10.00am to 4.00pm. As well as the museum and Café, the shop is also well worth a visit with a fantastic range of books (many by local authors), DVDs, prints – lovely gifts for that hard to buy for person in your life.
Entrance is just £3.00, with children going free when accompanied by an adult.
Like many charities in the current climate, the Heritage Centre is struggling with increased energy costs, building maintenance and training costs. The Centre is looking for ways to move forward. If you can help, please pay them a visit.
