Worksop Archaeological and Local History Society

by | 15 May 2025 | Heritage, Worksop

The last meeting of Worksop Archaeological and Local History Society held in March took place, but the programme was not as scheduled. However, Bob Evans was able to present one of the many records the Society holds of photos of old Worksop and the surrounding area from its archives. Many of these photos were unlabelled, so great interest was shown by the members in a free ’guessing game’ discussion.

Some people had their own memories of places, and the group photos of family, school, and sporting events also provoked interest. It was also a reminder that any of our own photos should be labelled for the interest of future generations!

The next meeting will be on Thursday 24th April at 7.30pm – please note the later time during the summer months. The speaker will be Elaine Perkins (aka Agnes Peterkin), and the talk will be entitled Concealed objects and written charms – Life of a medieval wise woman, which promises to be intriguing.

The meetings are held at The Poplars Church (formerly The Golden Ball) on Victoria Square, and there is car parking available at the rear of the premises for members. New members and visitors who are interested in local history are always welcome, paying just £6.00 as a member for the year. Meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of the month. Visitors will pay £4.00 per visit.

Future speakers

  • Thursday 22nd May – Lady Mary Wortley Montague, Roger England
  • Thursday 26th June – TBA, Bob Evans
  • Thursday 25th September – AGM and Old Worksop photos
