North Notts Chamber Choir – Summer Concert

by | 17 May 2025 | Hobbies, Music, Worksop

North Notts Chamber Choir are going on tour! Well, as far as Tickhill. For their Summer Concert, they will be leaving the splendour of Worksop College Chapel and performing at the Parish Church of St Mary’s. St Mary’s is a Grade 1 listed building, described as one of the finest medieval churches in Yorkshire, and the choir are very much looking forward to singing in this beautiful church which has stood in Tickhill since 1109.

The pieces they are performing will do justice to the church’s magnificent setting. The first piece will be the well-known and much-loved Requiem by Gabriel Fauré, written in 1890. This piece, with its five movements including Pie Jesu, will be accompanied by the church organ, built originally by Charles Brindley of Sheffield in 1857.

The second piece will be Birthday Madrigals, composed by John Rutter and first performed in 1995. The accompaniment for this piece will be by double bass and piano – an unusual combination.

The soloists are drawn from the final-year music scholars of Worksop College, who have performed many times with the choir. They are Laurena Kumar-Lee (soprano), Sam Mitchinson (bass), and Christian Aldridge (marimba). Sam, who will also play the double bass, will shortly take up his scholarship at The Royal College of Music, while Christian will pursue his scholarship at The Royal College of Music as an orchestral percussionist.

The choir, soloists, and accompaniment will, as usual, be under the baton of Music Director, Tim Uglow.

Information regarding ticket purchasing will be available shortly, but for now, please make a note of the date. The concert will take place at 5.30pm on Saturday 7th June.
