If you are thinking of making weight loss or better fitness a 2019 resolution, look no further than some of Barnsley Premier Leisure’s older members for inspiration. At Kilton Forest Golf Club, 86-year-old Ray Lane is one of the most dedicated members they have. After retiring aged 70, he joined Kilton at the turn of the millennium.
A newcomer to golf, he joined with the intention of learning how to play. An ex-haulage contractor, he was used to working six-and-a-half day weeks. It meant he was used to being active and wanted to keep up with his fitness during his retirement.
Ray’s wife died in 2006, which is when he began to attend Kilton more and more for the social benefits as well as the physical. He now visits on a Tuesday, Thursday and a Sunday and despite not being the greatest golfer — a fact Ray himself readily admits — he still loves to come along for the enjoyment.
Despite his modesty, clearly his time on the green is paying off: he has a shelf of trophies to his name as the 2009 Seniors Top Dog medal holder, the 2011 Lewis James Memorial winner and a three-time Senior Pairs Better Ball champion. With a strong social circle developed at the club, he has no intentions of stopping attending any time soon.
