The Woodlands and Coachwood Green viewpoint has a magnificent new landmark. Standing an impressive 3.8 metrer tall on a stone plinth, the new community sculpture has been officially installed at the Shireoaks site. Fabricated from durable galvanized mild steel, forged elements, and clay-crafted bronze details, the artwork stands as a permanent anchor for current and future generations.

Designed by renowned artist Richard Janes, the three-sided structure honours the rich heritage of Shireoaks while looking confidently toward the future. Each side represents a different facet of our past and present. To ground the design in authentic roots, the artist collaborated closely with local schools, former miners and local residents to unearth stories and memories. The intricate design titled ‘From Acorns’ weaves together three core themes:

  • Underground and industry: Circular pit wheels and headstocks sit atop growing shoots, capturing the colliery’s history alongside patterns mimicking underground geology.
  • Transport and trade: The baseplate and curved shoots pay tribute to our local canals and railways, drawing inspiration from historic cuckoo boat barges and classic steam trains.
  • Flora and fauna: The tallest pillar is capped with three Oak leaves, referencing the historic Shire Oak that once stood at the meeting point of three counties. It also features detailed representations of local wildlife regularly seen on the site including herons, kestrels, and regional emblems.

This incredible community arts project was made possible by the generous support of crowdfunders, local partners, and key grant providers. By blending local history with the creative imaginations of our schoolchildren, this sculpture ensures that a collective spirit remains permanently cast in steel. Be sure to visit the viewpoint to experience this stunning new centerpiece firsthand.

As a volunteer group, the Friends of Woodlands and Coachwood Green in Shireoaks, is focussed on sharing our heritage and conserving and enhancing biodiversity. They’re dependent on enthusiastic people and anyone is welcome to join. If you’re a gardener, a DIY-er, a nature-lover, a history-lover or just enjoy the outdoors and fancy helping then it’s a great way to meet new people and make a difference!
