Visit glorious gardens in the wonderful month of May

Named after the Greek goddess Maia, the month of May brings warmer temperatures, blooming flowers and the fresh beginnings of summer. Here are the Nottinghamshire National Garden Scheme open gardens you can visit this month:

The Old Vicarage

Halam Hill, Halam NG22 8AX
Sunday 8th May, 12.00pm to 4.00pm

Planted over 25 years by a plantswoman with an artful eye for garden design, this two-acre hillside garden has matured and is a much-admired garden with open views of the countryside. New for 2022 is newly planted area at the bottom of the garden. Beautiful 12th century church open just a short walk from the garden. Partial wheelchair access, dog friendly, plants for sale, parking, refreshments and cashless payments available.

Rhubarb Farm

Hardwick Street, Langwith NG20 9DR
Thursday 12th May, 10.30am to 3.30pm

This is a two-acre, horticultural, social enterprise which provides training and volunteering opportunities to 90 people from the local community. Go along and chat with the volunteers and enjoy the garden surroundings and farm animals. Highlights include eight polytunnels, willow dome and arch, flower borders, raised beds, comfry fertiliser factory and junk sculpture. Some wheelchair access, mobility scooter available, plants for sale, parking, refreshments, cashless payments available.

Ivy Bank Cottage

The Green, South Clifton NG23 7AG
Sunday 22nd May, 1.00pm to 5.00pm

A traditional cottage garden with herbaceous borders, fruit trees, including a Nottinghamshire Medlar, vegetable plots and may surprises including a stumpery, a troughery, dinosaur footprints and even fairies! Many original features with pigsties, privy and washhouse. Children can search for animal models and explore the shepherd’s hut. Lots of seating and covered refreshment area. Plants for sale, refreshments.

Norwell Nurseries

Woodhouse Road, Norwell NG23 6JX
Sunday 22nd May, 2.00pm to 5.00pm

Nationally renowned plant nursery which is home to two National plant collections of Astrantia and Hardy Chrysanthemums. The garden is a jewel box of over 3,000 different, beautiful and unusual plants sumptuously set out in a one acre plantsman’s garden including woodland area, cottage garden borders, scree borders, ponds and effervescent colour themed beds. Some wheelchair access, plants for sale, parking, refreshments.

Lavender Cottage and Normanton Hall

South Street, Normanton on Trent NG23 6RQ
Sunday 29th May, 1.00pm and 5.00pm

Joint opening. Lavender Cottage is a garden with herbaceous borders, mixed fruit and ornamental trees and raised vegetable beds. Started in 2021 and planted with mixed perennials beds, bulbs and patio pots. Hard paving around house with wide level grass path around garden. Wheelchair access, refreshments. Normanton Hall is a three-acre garden features a mixture of mature British trees, and recently planted unusual hardwood trees in an arboretum in a parkland setting. New planting of bulbs, rhododendrons and camellias. Wood anemones flourish in the woodland areas. Vegetable area. Wheelchair access, plants for sale, refreshments, picnic tables.
