Mining for Stories, a powerful exhibition celebrating the lives and experiences of Nottinghamshire’s mining communities, can now be seen in Ollerton. This free exhibition brings to life the voices of miners and their families from Ollerton, Thoresby and Bilsthorpe, capturing their memories, resilience and sense of community.
Open now at Dukeries Library, Mining for Stories offers a rare opportunity to explore the rich heritage of the region’s former mining communities through:
- Recorded interviews with miners and local residents
- First-hand accounts of the 1984–85 miners’ strikes
- A vibrant community artwork inspired by the legacy of mining
“Mining for Stories is a powerful celebration of the resilience, pride and community spirit that defined our mining towns,” said Councillor Rowan Cozens, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Heritage, Culture and the Arts at Newark and Sherwood District Council.
“By sharing these personal stories and creative expressions, we honour the legacy of those who shaped our district’s identity and ensure their voices continue to inspire future generations.” The exhibition has been touring Newark and Sherwood since July, with Dukeries Library marking its final stop. It will run there until Friday 13th February.
Mining for Stories is part of Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Open Doors programme – a free arts initiative delivering creative activities across the district. The programme encourages people of all ages and abilities to connect with their community, enjoy the arts and discover something new.
Funded by Arts Council England and delivered by Newark and Sherwood District Council, Open Doors hosts a range of activities in museums, libraries, schools, theatres and community venues. This exhibition forms part of the council’s ongoing commitment to preserving and promoting local heritage through inclusive and engaging cultural programming. Earlier in the year, Mining for Stories was displayed at Ollerton Library during the summer and at Newark Library throughout September and October.
