The Dukeries Singers is delighted to announce the development of an exciting repertoire for the 2025 concert. This initiative comes in response to a heartfelt request from a dedicated member, and there is great enthusiasm for the journey ahead.
The Musical Director is diligently sourcing music from contemporary composers, ensuring performances remain fresh and captivating. This year, there is particular excitement about the inclusion of excerpts from two current West End productions, bringing a touch of theatrical magic to the concerts.
One of the highlights of the repertoire will be selections from the iconic Les Misérables, based on Victor Hugo’s novel published in 1862. This timeless story is set during the revolutionary period of the 19th century. The musical premiered in Paris in 1980 and has graced the London stage since October 1985, making it the longest-running musical in the West End. It is an honour to perform excerpts from this masterpiece, featuring music composed by Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyrics by Alain Boublil.
Additionally, selections from Mamma Mia! will be included. This musical, based on the beloved songs of ABBA, first premiered in 1999 and has captured the hearts of audiences worldwide. The film adaptation, released in 2008, further cemented its popularity. It is estimated that over 65 million people have seen the show, a testament to its enduring appeal.
In celebration of special milestones, music will also be performed by contemporary composers marking significant birthdays this year. Eric Whitacre, the renowned American composer, is turning 55. Bob Chilcott, best known as a former member of The King’s Singers and currently conducting at Birmingham University Singers, is celebrating his 70th birthday. Lastly, John Rutter, founder of the Cambridge Singers and famed for his beloved Christmas compositions, is turning 80.
The choir looks forward to sharing these powerful and moving pieces with audiences, hoping the performances will resonate deeply with all who attend. More updates will follow as preparations continue for what promises to be an unforgettable year of music and artistry.
A wonderful evening of social fun was enjoyed when members shared party pieces. Mr Roger Bateman was honoured as the newly appointed Life President of The Dukeries Singers, while John Pope Musical Director, was awarded a certificate of appreciation for his outstanding direction of the recent Christmas concert.
