The Arts Society Dukeries’ next lecture is on Wednesday 5th July, where Sardina Arantxa will present ‘Sorolla – The Spanish Master of Light’.
Joaquin Sorolla hated darkness. Claude Monet once said that painting in general did not have enough light in it. Sorolla could not agree more; he believed painters could never reproduce sunlight as it really is, and he could only ‘approach the truth of it’.
However, he managed to capture like no other the light of the Mediterranean beaches he loved and the energy of Spanish life. He painted what he saw, quickly, to capture that precise moment, saying ‘I could not paint at all if I had to paint slowly… every effect is so transient, it must be rapidly painted’.
In this lecture, Sardina will look at Sorolla’s life and art, from his early education to his success; having been almost forgotten, only to be rediscovered in the last few years.
The Arts Society then has a summer break, so the next lecture will be in October.
The Society meets at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-in-Lindrick S81 9AP. Tea and coffee are available from 10.00am, ready to start by 11.00am and lasting for approximately one hour. Free car parking is available. Members pay an annual subscription; visitors are welcome at a cost of £7.00 per lecture.

Trails of Discovery
For nearly 20 years many UK Arts Societies have created Trails of Discovery for their local areas. The Arts Society Dukeries has made several Trails in this area, including a Memory Trail in Carlton in LIndrick and a Village Trail at Scrooby to tie in with the Mayflower 400 celebrations. Children’s Trails in Churches can be found at Cuckney, Edwinstowe, Blyth and Carlton in Lindrick. Discovering a historic place of worship and its artworks, artefacts and social history can be inspiring and prompt young people to explore the stories behind their local landmarks.
Most recently, they have created a Trail of Discovery for Tickhill with the support of the Town Council. It is downloadable to a mobile phone, tablet or iPad and has interactive, multiple-choice questions about places of interest.
