The Arts Society Dukeries also supports the local community through voluntary arts-related initiatives. These include recording and identifying objects, buildings, and villages of historical and artistic interest.

First Children’s Trail of Discovery for North-East Derbyshire

The Society, which includes members from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and South Yorkshire, has created numerous local trails for both children and adults. It has now launched its first Trail of Discovery in Derbyshire, at St Lawrence’s Church in Whitwell. The trail was officially opened in June by Year 5 and 6 pupils from the two local primary schools. With the support of teaching staff and volunteers, the children enjoyed exploring the church and completing the trail, finishing with drinks, biscuits, certificates and stickers as rewards.

The Trail of Discovery is a free summer holiday activity, ideal for children aged 8 to 12, with answer sheets available for accompanying adults. St Lawrence’s Church is open daily, with parking available outside. Visitors are warmly encouraged to come and enjoy learning more about the local history, art and architecture of this beautiful church.

Lectures and meetings

The Arts Society Dukeries meets on the first Wednesday of most months, offering members a lecture on a specific art topic. In addition to these lectures and social gatherings, members can also enjoy special interest study days, holidays with the Society, and trips to local events and theatres—including a Gilbert and Sullivan production at Buxton Opera House. Members also receive regular newsletters and a national magazine. The Society is currently on its summer break and will next meet on the first Wednesday in October. It meets at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-in-Lindrick S81 9AP. Tea and coffee are available from 10.00am, providing time for members to socialise before announcements at 10.50am. The lecture runs from 11.00am to approximately 12.00pm, depending on questions. Free car parking is available. Members pay an annual subscription. Visitors are welcome and may attend by paying at the door.
