by | 26 June 2025 | Art, Hobbies, Sherwood

The Arts Society Dukeries meets at Carlton Civic Centre on the first Wednesday of most months for a lecture on a specific art topic, and members are currently enjoying an exciting 2025 programme. In addition to lectures and extra study / special interest days, members can enjoy holidays with the Society, trips to local events and theatres, including a Gilbert and Sullivan production at Buxton Opera House.

Members also receive newsletters and a national magazine.
The next lecture takes place on Wednesday 2nd July and will be delivered by speaker Mark Ovenden. Entitled ‘160 Years of London Underground: Design and Architecture’, the talk explores early efforts to create graphic unity in the 1860s and 1870s, the underground’s expansion, and the challenges of cohesion between different operators.

It will also examine Leslie Green’s architecture and the Arts and Crafts movement, Frank Pick’s influence, Edward Johnston’s typeface, Charles Holden’s architecture, the Streamline Moderne / Art Deco era, and the post-war design aesthetic. The lecture continues through to modern developments such as the Jubilee line extension, the formation of Transport for London, recent architectural schemes, and looks ahead to future projects including the Elizabeth line and Northern line extension to Battersea.

Meetings are held at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-in-Lindrick, S81 9AP. Tea and coffee are available from 10.00am, with members gathering socially before receiving notices at 10.50am. The lecture runs from 11.00am to approximately 12.00pm, depending on questions. Free car parking is available.

Members pay an annual subscription, and visitors are welcome, paying at the door.
