The second half of the rugby season is underway! At Retford Rugby Club, the women’s team hopes to continue their success from the end of last year, having won their first game against local rivals Gainsborough. A final score of 14-27 to the Green Army’s first senior women’s team gave plenty of reasons to celebrate.
For the men, a special thanks goes to player and sponsor Dan Rees at The King’s Arms, Clarborough, for providing a hearty breakfast as the team travelled to Grimsby for their first game after Christmas. It has also been heartening to see returning faces lacing up their boots once more and new faces joining, particularly in the Minis and Juniors’ section.
However, on a broader scale, it is evident that rugby as a sport is in decline. With votes of no confidence in the RFU executive chief, complaints of ‘excessive bureaucracy and poor governance’, and a lack of support for grassroots rugby, clubs across the country are feeling the strain, and Retford is no exception.
The most pressing need is for players, especially senior men aged 17 and above, for the club to thrive. Training takes place on Tuesdays from 6.45pm. Historically, the club has fielded up to five senior men’s teams, but now, heartfelt thanks go to those who consistently show up to wear the green and yellow.
It is hoped that meaningful change within the RFU will bring better support and guidance to clubs in more rural areas. Retford Rugby Club is also seeking new volunteers with fresh ideas to revitalise the club. New members and sponsors are always welcome.
