Museums of Tuxford

Following on from the historic occasion of VE Day, with the focus being the town centre, the Museums of Tuxford were delighted to welcome children from the primary academy, who laid a white wreath for peace and a purple one for the animals killed during wartime. Permission to restore the war memorial – so that the names of the fallen can once again be read – was recently granted, and the work has now been completed. Although this has now been achieved, it took three years, thanks to the efforts of Norman Birkett and the people of Tuxford.

Sunflowers grown by Lorraine Barnes were planted on VE Day, as they are the national flower of Ukraine. Residents are encouraged to look out for them as they grow and begin to peep over the museum wall. Those we have lost stay forever in our memories.

Plans are in place for a rededication of the war memorial, which was initially funded by the residents of Tuxford. The date is yet to be announced – please see the museums’ Facebook pages for updates.

At the Walks of Life Museum, more roses are being planted in the Memory Garden, bringing together families and friends of people who have made a significant contribution to Tuxford over the years. The poppy creation continues, although now they are being sewn onto nets. Around 40 people have contributed, and the project has inspired the making of wreaths, brooches, hair bobbles and grips, all to support the Retford branch of the Royal British Legion. Friends meet every Thursday for crafts, coffee and a chat.

Poppies have even been sent from as far afield as Bridlington. A photo of a rug on a horse showcases these handmade tributes, inspired by the horses who left from the Ossington Estate during the Second World War.

The Museum of the Horse auction was a great success, with items selling to Denmark, Ireland, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, the USA and Ireland. It is remarkable what can be achieved online these days. For those wondering – no, Sally is not selling up the museum, as a few have asked. The auction is simply a way to raise funds so the museum can continue in the future. As Sally turns 80 this year, she acknowledges that none of us lasts forever, and space is needed for new items. Another auction is being planned for September. Anyone wishing to sell items should get in touch.

The children’s pony book exhibition proved so popular it was extended for a further two weeks.

The museum’s first 1940s tea dance will take place on Thursday 5th June from 4.00pm to 8.00pm. There will be live music from Jessica Brett. Tickets are £6.00 and include soft drinks and cake. It is hoped that the event will be well supported, as it will be held in the old ballroom upstairs. If it proves popular, more tea dances may be planned.
