Major Oak Surgery – Patient Participation Group

by | 12 March 2024 | Community facility, Health, Sherwood

Your Patient Representatives at Edwinstowe’s Major Oak Surgery have been busy over the last few months; continuing to offer a patient perspective on services provided by the practice and contributing to improvement of services and communication between the surgery and its patients.

The representatives act as a critical friend and provide practical support and help to implement change. The NHS aims to help patients to take more responsibility for their own health, so in partnership with the practice, they organised health talks for patients in 2023.

Several informative sessions on all types of dementia were provided by Hazel from Alzheimer’s UK. These were very well received, and Hazel spoke to patients after the event to see where she could help. The practice is currently training a member of staff to be the surgery dementia champion enabling them to offer guidance and signpost dementia patients and carers to the correct organisations who offer help.

John, a trainer from Mansfield Community First Responders, gave a demonstration on the use of defibrillators; patients said it gave them the confidence to use a defib in an emergency. Defibrillators are located at various points around the village; it would be useful and possibly lifesaving if local organisations consider providing one on their premises if they don’t have one currently.

More health talks and demonstrations are being planned for 2024, so look out for publicity and text messages from the surgery if you would like to join in.
