Friends of Milton Mausoleum

This year ended with some special and poignant moments for the Friends of Milton Mausoleum.

Saturday 11th November was the day of the third Christmas Gifts and Crafts Fayre in the Mausoleum. The event was well attended, with refreshments provided by Egmanton WI. As it was also Remembrance Day, it was arranged to have two minutes silence.

It was also the 80th anniversary of the air crash nearby in which airmen lost their lives on 3rd December 1943. Due to atrocious weather and low fuel, the plane tried to land at Bardney which they aborted and then attempted to land at Ossington and finally Gamston airfield. Unfortunately, they misjudged the runway and crashed into a field in the vicinity of the Mausoleum.

A monument to the airmen is located just to the right through the gate into the grounds. A Representative of 1X (B) Sqn. Association came to join in with the short act of remembrance and to leave their wreath as a mark of respect.

Additional wreaths were placed at the monument by The Friends of the Mausoleum, Markham Clinton Parish Council and the Markham Clinton Community Project.

Saturday 2nd December saw the Mausoleum’s final event of the year: Carols by Candlelight. It is always a very popular start to the Christmas season.

A packed house joined in carols and were also entertained by the Village Harmony singers. Guests were welcomed with mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies. A seasonal raffle was well received.

When the Friends Committee concluded the afternoon’s entertainment by singing ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’ they were accompanied by a young girl in the audience who signed the words as they sang; huge gratitude is extended to this young girl for such an original and engaging addition to the event.

The Committee of Friends of the Mausoleum would like to thank you all for your continued support and interest in their events and to wish all a healthy New Year.
