The Edwinstowe and Dukeries Lions have been busy helping people physically and also helping people to achieve their goals, in addition to fundraising for the future.
On 27th May, The Lions were at The Wellow Maypole Celebrations, helping the Wellow organisation by running their raffle, which raised a substantial amount, so they are now able to move forward to next year’s celebration. The Lions also had a stand at Wellow raising awareness of all the great work they do, along with a ‘name the lion’ competition, which was won by Lucy Owen of Mansfield Woodhouse.
The annual Lions Race Night took place on 1st June, at South Forest Leisure Centre, Edwinstowe. This was a very successful evening with fun and fundraising going together.
One of the people they have helped recently is Lauren King, who is an Assistant Beaver Scout Leader, who is hoping to raise £3,000, so she can work at the Scout Jamboree in the USA. Lauren is local to the area and was chosen as an International Service Team Representative and will be part of the UK media team. She was chosen from 400 applications, of which only 10 were successful. 50% of the £3,000 she raises will go to help a less fortunate scout in the world attend the jamboree. Lauren impressed The Lions with her commitment to the scouting movement and is working hard to gather in the full amount. The Lions were pleased to be able to help with this, and to get her closer to her goal.
During the year, Edwinstowe and Dukeries Lions help to promote various well-meaning charities and currently they are helping the Brain Tumour Research Charity. Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, so they are helping to raise awareness and funds, by selling lapel badges for £5.00. This is a small amount to donate for such worthwhile research. If you feel you wish to donate, please contact Bob on 07815 473802.
The motto of the Edwinstowe and Dukeries Lions is ‘Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion’. In addition to raising funds, they are also active with social activities. If you consider you are the type of person who could become a Lion and help those less fortunate than others, please contact Jon or Diane on 07581 265531. They meet at South Forest Leisure Centre, Edwinstowe, every fourth Thursday of the month, at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome, so just go along and meet the ‘friendly and crazy’ people.
