With the ground becoming softer and the sun out, the Edwinstowe in Bloom (EIB) team has managed to start planting bulbs and sowing wildflower seeds. 10kg of bulbs have been planted at the Mansfield Road Gateway Sign, and at the Ollerton and Church Street Gateway signs. The planters by the village hall now have some primulas which will give a colourful display when they are fully out.
Wildflower seeds have been sown along the bank that was cleared by the new development at Thoresby Vale. The team would like to thank whoever donated a Papaver Brilliant plant; all donations are very welcome and can be left outside village hall gates.
EIB has been trying to find out about the Robin Hood monument in the Village Hall carpark at the entrance to the Church. Who commissioned it, why was it built and has it always been there? They have discovered that it was funded by the Nottinghamshire Experience as part of the Nottingham Trail ‘In the footstep of Robin Hood’, one of 12 audio tracks in all, set in other monuments across Nottinghamshire.
Do you know where any of the other monuments were and if any of them are still standing? If you know anything more about the Edwinstowe monument or any of the others on the trail, please email eib@btinternet.com.
EIB created the heart bunting which featured as part of the ‘Love Edwinstowe and Sherwood Forest’ heart trail organised by RSPB Sherwood Forest in February. This was a great joint venture and an opportunity to raise awareness of Edwinstowe in Bloom.
The group has started a photography competition, the theme of which is the celebration of Edwinstowe, the people, environment, the natural life of the area and the pleasures and benefits of gardening.
Entries can be backdated to cover the months from October 2022 to March 2023. So, you can enter six entries for the backdated period, then one a month from April onwards. Each month the entries will be judged and the 12 winning photographs will be printed in the Edwinstowe in Bloom Calendar 2024. Find details on the EIB Facebook page, where you can also find out about the group’s Tallest Sunflower competition.
This competition will be promoted on the EIB stall at the Prostate Cancer Event in the Arts and Crafts Centre in Edwinstowe at the Easter weekend. Go along to support this worthwhile cause!
