There was very little rain during the month, so Edwinstowe in Bloom’s bowser was out on its rounds throughout – a worthwhile investment.
Evening primroses and ox-eye daisies have been planted in the Robin Hood bed. Volunteers are also busy at the allotment: space has been cleared to plant more seeds; the netting over the brassicas has been raised as they continue to grow; the beans have been prolific and the dahlias are blooming. Apples have also begun to fall from the tree. Produce from the allotment continues to be donated to the Food Hub, alongside surplus donations from other allotment holders.
On Wednesday 24th September, three members of Edwinstowe in Bloom attended the East Midlands in Bloom presentation event at Grimsby Town Hall for the 2025 competition, joining villages and towns from across the region. On Sunday 28th September, a group of volunteers held a scything session at Linda’s Meadow. The yellow rattle sown last year, together with ongoing thistle-pulling, has worked well, making it much easier to scythe now that the long, coarse grasses are less abundant. The area is developing really well, having had the time it needed.
Also on Sunday 28th September, Edwinstowe in Bloom held the Community Big Reveal at Edwinstowe Community Cricket Club from 3.00pm to 7.45pm. The event was an opportunity to thank volunteers and announce Edwinstowe’s results to the community. There was a BBQ by Callieu the butchers and live music from Pete Jones. The event was open to all in the village.
Entries are requested for the 2025 scarecrow competition. Create a scarecrow of an inspiring woman from Edwinstowe, past or present. Entries must be visible from the road, at least one metre high, and on display from Saturday 18th to Sunday 26th October. Entries must be confirmed by Thursday 9th October. In the photography competition, the August winner was Vicky Latham with the stunning Cavendish Apples. Entries are now invited for the October competition. Photos may feature any subject of interest taken in the Edwinstowe area – not only flowers or landscapes, but also events, animals or anything that evokes Edwinstowe. If you are an amateur photographer aged over 16, please consider taking part. Send entries each month by midnight on the last day of the month, in .jpg format, to the email address below, including a title and the location where the photo was taken.
