Throughout the month of July, Edwinstowe in Bloom (EiB) volunteers were busy once again with the bowser, keeping the wildflower meadow, flower beds, and allotment watered during the hot weather. The social gardening sessions on Monday afternoons have proved to be very popular. It looks as though this will now be a regular session in future, and anyone is invited to join in. Other sessions could be set up in the future for other days and times in the week.
Together with the help of other allotment holders and the volunteers, EiB continued the weekly drop of produce to the food hub. This month, it included not only lettuces, cucumbers, runner beans, French beans, courgettes, and marrows but also some flowers.
The Edwinstowe in Bloom shop window competition for was held for local businesses that are on the East Midlands in Bloom (EMIB) judging route to enter their shopfront or shop window into the competition. The theme for this year’s competition was ‘Celebrating 100 years since the sinking of the Thoresby Colliery’. The theme was also featured in the EiB displays around the village for the EMIB judging. Entrants in the competition were asked to have their displays out between 15th June and 7th July. The entries were judged between 1st and 5th July. The winners of the 2025 competition are Acorn Interiors for the Shop Front and Tootsies (display by Marie) for the Shop Window. The EiB team would like to thank everyone who took part, as it is about the community joining together to create a positive environment for all.
On Sunday 13th July, a Memorial Service was held in St Mary’s Church to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the Thoresby Colliery. In Bloomers Jeanne and Jo created the amazing flower displays in the church using flowers from the community allotment. A lovely touch for a beautiful service. This month, EiB won £500 in the NSDC Community Lottery. On Friday 26th July, representatives from NSDC visited the allotment to meet with some of the EiB volunteers to hand over the cheque.
In the Photography competition, the winning photograph for July was the striking photograph of The Sunrise over the Farm Fields by Carra Senekal. Photos of anything of interest taken in the Edwinstowe area are now sought for the September competition. The photos do not have to be flowers or landscapes; you can also include photos of events, animals, or anything that reminds you of Edwinstowe. If you are an amateur photographer and over 16, please consider taking part and send your entries each month by midnight on the last day of the month, in .jpg format to the email address below, together with a title and where the photo was taken.
