Edwinstowe In Bloom

Once again, Edwinstowe in Bloom (EiB) had many donations of plants during the last month, for which they are extremely grateful. The volunteers have been extremely busy this month tidying up all the flower beds round the village and in the allotment, getting everywhere ready for the judging on Wednesday 2nd July. A lot of time has been spent on the Mansfield Road beds, removing all the barley to give the plants more space to grow.

The planters were all replanted and decorated with the wicker headstocks made at the training sessions last month, before being redistributed around the village.

On Monday 1st June, Newark and Sherwood District Council representatives visited the allotment to meet and thank all of the EiB volunteers. Grant money from the Council will be used to purchase materials to improve the allotment. In stages throughout June, they replaced the fence rails and the gates on the allotment and in July they will be concentrating on improving the pathways around the allotment to make it more accessible.

EiB opened the 2025 Shop Window / Shop Front competition for entries at the end of May. This year Edwinstowe in Bloom’s theme for our East Midlands in Bloom entry celebrates ‘100 years since the sinking of Thoresby Colliery’, so they are looking for entries that celebrate the centenary anniversary and the strong village link to mining. Posters have been put up around the village and on social media inviting people to take part and they aim to judge the entries between 1st and 5th July. Watch this space for photos of the winning entries.

In the Photography competition the winning photograph for May was the beautiful photograph of Bluebells in Birklands by Caroline Reid.

They are now looking for photos of anything of interest taken in the Edwinstowe area for the July competition. The photos do not have to be flowers or landscapes; you can also include photos of events, animals or anything which reminds you of Edwinstowe. If you are an amateur photographer and over 16, please consider taking part, and send your entries each month by midnight on the last day of the month, in .jpg format to the email address below together with a title and where the photo was taken.
