In early May, volunteers from Edwinstowe in Bloom (EiB) planted a wide range of seeds – some in seed trays at the allotment, others directly into the flowerbeds and Linda’s meadow. These are now beginning to grow well. Throughout the month, work continued at the allotment, with volunteers planting onions and carrots. A space was also cleared for new compost bins, which were ready at the start of the month. The good weather enabled the team to empty and collect the planters, repair and repaint them, and refresh them with new plants. The sunny days also meant the bowser could be put to good use, keeping all the flowerbeds well watered. EiB extends thanks to the generous residents who recently donated a variety of plants.
During May, EiB ran a series of free willow weaving sessions. The aim was to create ‘headstocks’ for the planters while also giving participants the chance to make something to take home. Dried flowers were also available for those who wanted to craft a summer wreath. The first session took place with the MIND group, and was greatly enjoyed by all involved – resulting in two versions of headstocks for the planters. Further sessions at the Abbey Road Community Centre led to the creation of eight more headstocks.
EiB also proudly supported No Mow May, a Newark and Sherwood District Council initiative promoting environmental sustainability. Selected green spaces and country parks were left to grow wild, creating biodiverse habitats for insects and wildlife. This approach encouraged the blooming of wildflowers and helped provide essential nectar for pollinators such as honeybees, bumblebees, butterflies, moths, and beetles, as well as food for birds and small mammals.
In the EiB photography competition, the winning image for April was Bee Blossom by Vicky Latham. Submissions are now open for the June competition. Entrants are encouraged to submit photographs of anything taken in the Edwinstowe area – this can include flowers, landscapes, local events, animals, or anything that captures the spirit of the village. The competition is open to amateur photographers aged 16 and over. Entries should be sent in jpg format by midnight on the last day of each month, along with a title and the photo location.
