Work continued throughout the month with volunteers busy clearing, planting, and weeding in the allotment and flowerbeds around the village. Following last month’s update, Edwinstowe in Bloom (EiB) received a generous donation of snowdrops and other bulbs from Carole and Colin. Enormous thanks go to them for both the donation and for allowing EiB volunteers access to their garden to retrieve the bulbs.
The majority have now been successfully re-homed in the churchyard, with others relocated to the Church Rooms and Paddock Close. These snowdrops have added beautifully to the autumn planting, creating a wonderful spring display. Carole kindly offered any surplus bulbs for fundraising, and £194.60 was raised through sales.
Thanks are also extended to Newark and Sherwood District Council. Earlier in the year, EiB applied for a grant from the NSDC Community Grant Scheme, which supports local clubs, groups, and not-for-profit organisations to improve their communities and enhance the lives of residents. EiB was fortunate to receive a grant of £5,000. Two representatives from the scheme visited the allotment to present the cheque to some of the EiB officers and volunteers.
The grant will be used to expand the community allotment, making it more accessible, user-friendly, and cost-effective. The team will grow crops to donate to Edwinstowe Food Club and propagate seeds to refresh village flowerbeds.
The Heart Trail has now concluded for another year. A large number of participants enjoyed exploring the village, solving clues, and submitting their answer sheets either in person or via email. Huge thanks go to all the businesses who acted as collection or drop-off points and those who donated prizes. Congratulations to all prize winners – the answers are now published on the EiB Facebook page.
The winning entry in the March photography competition was Memorial Bench in the Churchyard by Scott Carlton. Entries for the May 2025 competition are now open. Submissions can include anything of interest in the Edwinstowe area – not just flowers or landscapes but also events, animals, and other local scenes.
Amateur photographers aged 16 or over are encouraged to take part. Please send entries by midnight on the last day of each month in .jpg format, including a title and the location where the photo was taken, to eib@btinternet.com.
