Edwinstowe In Bloom

We need to say a massive Thankyou to students and staff in the Construction Department at Academy Transformation Trust Further Education College for the planters they built for us. Also, to Newark and Sherwood District Council for supporting the project. Volunteers painted the planters blue and decorated them with the wording “Edwinstowe in Bloom” and appropriate symbols.

These have been placed round the village, and you can see one at Forest corner and another at the BT site. One of the volunteers has created a statue of a horse made from recycled materials and another has made a giant arrow and these have been added to the decorations at the BT site.

All the volunteers have been hard at work getting ready for this Years East Midland Britain in Bloom Judging. The gateways and beds are looking great. The Beatie site has been spruced up and the allotment is coming along well. We have some broad beans ready and we will soon have some potatoes Beetroot and radishes available, and we are hoping to be able to provide some of the produce we have grown for the food hub.

We had a one set back to our preparation for the Judging. In the final week just before the judges visit, at the request of the Fire service, we were asked to cut down the flowers either side of the Station entrance. They apparently blocked the view. It was pointed out to us that they presented a risk of a road traffic collision due to the obstruction of the view of the road for vehicles leaving the station, especially during emergencies, (obviously not the Fire engines). Whilst we were really sad to remove the Poppies and wildflowers, we have acted in the best interest of all concerned. Next year we will plant lower growing plants and herbs so that we do not have this problem again.

We had tremendous support from the high street shops for the Judging for the EM Britain in Bloom which took place on Wednesday 3rd July. The Judges were given an overview and presentation when the arrived at the Village Cricket Club. They were then taken on a tour of the allotment and the flower beds, the High Street and Gateways, plus the entries for the Best Front Garden, Hotel, Business Premises etc and given a chance to meet the volunteers responsible at each site. The judges were presented with a portfolio to take away with them, detailing all the work that has been done and what has been achieved this year. All of the volunteers were invited to a buffet lunch at the cricket club as a thankyou for all their efforts. Unfortunately, the Judges were not able to stay for the lunch due to prior commitments but everyone enjoyed the day. All we have to do now is wait until September to see how we have done.

In the EiB Photography Competition, the winning entry for May was the beautiful photograph of Wildflowers by Vicky Latham. The winning entries for June will be included in the next article. We are now looking for entries for August, so, if you are an amateur photographer and over 16, please consider taking part and send your entries in jpg format to the email address below.
