Edwinstowe in Bloom

by | 9 May 2023 | Environment, Notice, Sherwood

The bulbs and spring flowers that were planted round the village by Edwinstowe in Bloom volunteers have been blooming and looked great along the roadsides, also in the planters and beds. Sadly, some of the early daffodils are starting to die off, but next year they’ll all look even better.

Edwinstowe in Bloom (EiB) was very pleased to get its first plant donation and looks forward to receiving any that you can spare. They can be left at the group’s plant donation point sign at ‘Outside the Cave’ or by the sign at the Village Hall railings.

As the weather is now improved, the group will be refreshing the plants in the beds that were created last year and creating new beds during Social Gardening events. Watch out for the details on their Facebook page.

Some members have been attending the wildflower meadow training sessions organised by Feel Good Gardens and Sherwood Forest Friends of the Earth. Financed by Miner2Major and Natural England and given by Andy Hollis from Ecologic, they were open to volunteers at EiB for free. The training is taking place at Feel Good Gardens, who want to create wildflower meadow areas so the sessions also contain a practical element and will be continuing through May and June.

A special session on wildflowers was held on 22nd March for children from the local schools.

Newark YMCA and Visit Sherwood Forest organised a Bug and Bird Box building session on Monday 20th March. This session was attended by St Mary’s Primary School and Edwinstowe Rainbows and Brownies, with everyone really engrossed and thoroughly enjoying themselves. Some of the boxes will be added to EiB spaces soon.

The Sunflower seed competition is now underway. It was promoted on the stall at the Arts and Crafts Centre on Friday 7th April. Sunflower seed kits were made up with a plant pot, compost, seeds and instructions and were available there alongside other items that were on sale to raise funds for Edwinstowe in Bloom. Sunflower seed kits were also made up and sent to the Food Hub in time for them to be sent out with the Easter deliveries.

EiB would like to thank everyone who has so far submitted entries for their Photography Competition. The deadline for the first six months was 31st March and the deadline for each of the following months is the last day of the month. The winning entries for each month will be published on their Facebook page.

They are now looking for entries for May; if you are an amateur photographer and over 18 please send your entries in jpg format to eib@btinternet.com.

The group will be taking a stall at the RSPB VE Day and Coronation event in Sherwood Forest on Sunday 7th May.
