In Mike Jackson’s booklet Story of a Forest Village, mention is made of a two-day fair in Edwinstowe held each year towards the end of October. In the 14th century, this fair took place in the churchyard, where a small cluster of stalls and booths brought variety and excitement into the lives of villagers before the hard days of winter set in.
In more recent times, the fair moved to a field near the village, and eventually to a more permanent site on the forest corner. This became a popular attraction for visitors during the summer months. Sadly, the much-loved fairground – cared for by the same family for over 60 years – closed in 2023.
Edwinstowe Historical Society’s in-house illustrated talk on Wednesday 15th October is entitled ‘Lord Byron’s Screen’, and explores Byron’s interests in both the theatre and boxing.
