December was a particularly busy and enjoyable month for Edwinstowe Handbell Ringers, beginning with the welcome of a new ringer to the group. She quickly picked up the music and was soon taking part in concerts. The Christmas season opened with performances at St Mary’s Church during the Christmas Tree Festival and Light Switch On. Two members of the public also joined in to ‘have a go’, adding to the fun of the occasion.
The group performed twice with the Dukeries Singers at their Christmas concerts in Ollerton and Edwinstowe. These events included generous refreshments and a successful raffle, raising money for charity. The Handbell Ringers also supported the Dukeries Singers at The Oaklands Care Home in Warsop, helping to raise funds for the John Eastwood Hospice. An invitation was also received from the Nottingham Hospitals Charity to take part in a concert raising money for Hayward House at Nottingham City Hospital. The event brought together a range of community choirs and it was a pleasure to be involved.
For the first time, the group accompanied carol singing at Kneesal Church and later at Lifespring Church, offering an alternative to the more usual organ or piano accompaniment. Another first followed with a performance in a barn at the Bealby family farm, once again in support of the John Eastwood Hospice.
The festive season concluded back at St Mary’s Church, performing at the Christingle Service on Christmas Eve. Afterwards, two members of the public expressed an interest in joining the group, which was especially welcome as new ringers are always encouraged.
No music-reading experience is required to take part in practices. A sense of rhythm and the ability to count confidently is all that is needed. The group usually meets on Sunday evenings in the Church Rooms from 7.00pm. As well as enjoying rehearsals and learning together, the Handbell Ringers are keen supporters of charity events.
