Edwinstowe and the Dukeries Lions Club

Edwinstowe and the Dukeries Lions Club have been busy in the summer, not just with charitable work but also with having a bit of fun!

Their new format is a business meeting every second Thursday and a social meeting every fourth Thursday of each month.

In August they collected 13 boxes of glasses from Specsavers Sutton in Ashfield to be distributed to needy countries and charities. This is an ongoing project for the Lions as they were challenged by Helen Keller, at their 1925 international convention, to become ‘Knights of the Blind’ and to support ‘preventable blindness and crusade against darkness’.

Lions accepted that challenge and have supported it from then to this day. Specsavers are a considerable supporter in this cause, in addition to Center Parcs and the general public donations.

Being a Lion is about helping others in our own communities, but the group also loves a bit of fun; there is always a meal, a drink, even a game or two. Members all went to Nottingham Greyhound stadium recently to lose a bit of money – which they all successfully did!

There is a Fashion Show on Tuesday 24th October, at 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start at South Forest Leisure Complex in Edwinstowe. There will be lot of designer label ladies wear at reduced prices. Tickets cost £10.00 and are available from the venue or Jon, details below.

Following that, of course, Lions will be preparing to help Santa meet children around local villages. The group always needs support for this, especially helpers and towers. They collect a big majority of funds from this work, enabling them to help others throughout the year.
