For many people, the arrival of autumn brings dark, damp days, early evenings and an endless battle with fallen leaves. For members of Dukeries u3a, however, the season seems to bring renewed energy – as shown by the flurry of activities taking place recently.

A guided tour of Clipstone Headstocks proved to be a celebration of Nottinghamshire’s industrial heritage, featuring exhibits ranging from mining memorabilia to Raleigh bicycles, classic cars and militaria, including anti-aircraft guns. The 90-minute tour was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The Play Reading Group continues to go from strength to strength, recently celebrating its first year with readings of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, Mike Leigh’s Abigail’s Party and Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood.

The Banjoleers (formerly known as Cheeky Blinders), led by Phil Topley, are currently rehearsing enthusiastically for their forthcoming performance at the u3a Christmas Party on Monday 15th December – enjoying every moment of their preparations. The History Group, led by Barbara Baglee, recently enjoyed an engaging presentation titled Arthur Mee’s View of Our Part of Nottinghamshire – a nostalgic and enlightening trip down memory lane.

Meanwhile, the Ramblers embraced the splendour of the season with a colourful autumn walk along the Teversal Trail to the Miner’s Statue. Along the way, they encountered some overprotective swans – one of which had a quick nip at a walker’s leg, fortunately deflected by a knee guard! The u3a movement offers a wonderful opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills and share interests. Dukeries u3a is open to all adults, regardless of employment status, and membership costs £20.00 per person until 31st March. This includes access to all activities and interest groups, as well as those of the North Notts Neighbourhood Group.

New members are welcome to attend up to two monthly meetings, held on the third Monday of each month from 12.30pm to 3.00pm, for £1.00 to cover refreshments.
