Dukeries u3a

This consistently hot, dry and windy weather brings joy to some but misery to others – particularly those who suffer from hayfever, which has reportedly been especially virulent this summer. Undeterred, members of the Dukeries u3a have been making excellent use of the fine weather by getting out and about, learning new skills, exercising body and mind, or simply enjoying good company.

The All Sorts Crafts and Gardening Group were recently treated to a demonstration by Sue North on creating ‘Flowers in a Teacup’, before crafting their own miniature displays. Meanwhile, the WhatsApp Walkers have been exploring local trails of around three to four miles. At the end of May, they enjoyed a circular ramble beginning and ending at Reg Taylor’s nursery near Southwell.

The Tennis, Badminton, Pickleball, Boule and Frisbee Group continues to thrive under the enthusiastic leadership of Paul Webb. Pickleball – a racket or ‘paddle’ sport similar to tennis – is proving especially popular, with Paul also introducing Soft Tennis and Badminton. These sessions are an excellent way to work all the muscles and stay active. Elsewhere, the Tuesday and Sunday Lunch Clubs remain a firm favourite for those who enjoy social dining, good conversation, and a relaxed atmosphere. Hosts Maria Pitrolino and Beryl Lee carefully choose accessible local venues, making it a very civilised way to spend a lunchtime.

The u3a movement is a wonderful way to make new friends, socialise and explore new interests. Dukeries u3a is open to all adults, regardless of employment status. Membership costs £20.00 per person and runs until 31st March 2026, offering access to all activities and interest groups, including those of the North Notts Neighbourhood Group. To find out more, visitors are welcome to attend up to two meetings, held on the third Monday of each month from 12.30pm to 3.00pm. There is a £1.00 charge to cover refreshments.
