The arrival of spring always heralds, for Dukeries u3a, election season in the form of the Annual General Meeting, which reflects upon the year just past and anticipates the year to come. These elections are open to all Dukeries members to vote for key roles within the committee, and there is a genuine air of excitement about what could be on offer in the new year to whet everybody’s appetite. Watch this space!

The groups continue to flourish and, in some cases, are taking full advantage of an unseasonably dry and sunny April and early May. The History Group enjoyed a walk around Retford town centre with guide Sam Millard, learning about the fascinating story of one of Nottinghamshire’s most important settlements, whose history stretches all the way back to the Mesolithic period. The Ramblers have boosted their numbers with three welcome new additions. Their first April walk started in Kneesall and went via the Hagley Dumbles to Maplebeck and Eakring – a round trip of about eight miles. Refreshments at the Haybarn in Kneesall were reported to be absolutely delicious.

The Soft Tennis, Badminton and Boules Group has added Pickleball to its list of games on offer, which is proving extremely popular. They hope to restart Boules and Frisbee once the weather warms up. The Sunday and Tuesday Lunch Clubs continue to attract good attendances, with recent popular venues including the Greendale Oak in Cuckney and Forest Lodge in Edwinstowe. Finally, members are keenly anticipating the guided group visit to the Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln at the very end of May – a trip to savour.

The u3a movement is a good way to make new friends, socialise or learn something new. There are a lot of exciting things happening at Dukeries u3a, which is open to all adults irrespective of employment status. Membership now costs £20.00 per person until 31st March and includes access to all activities and interest groups, including those of the North Notts Neighbourhood Group.

To find out more, prospective members are welcome to attend up to two meetings, held on the third Monday of each month from 12.30pm to 3.00pm, for £1.00 to cover refreshments.
