Are you aged over 50 and not in full time employment or do you know a family member or friend who might benefit from membership of Dukeries u3a? Perhaps you are ready for something new now venues are opening up. Then please go along to the Dukeries u3a special ‘u3a day’ relaunch event on Saturday 11th September.
Existing and prospective members, local community leaders and members of the public are invited to go along and see the varied programme of intellectual, recreational and social activities that they offer. This event will be held at the Jubilee Hall, Wellow Road, Ollerton, opening at 10.30am with displays of the activity and interest groups.
Also included will be a Heritage walk around Ollerton, led by John and Hazel, searching out hidden clues of the village’s history. Refreshments will be available during the morning. After an afternoon break, the event will start again at 6.00pm with a quiz where Dukeries u3a members will be pitting their wits against teams drawn from local community groups, followed by a Ploughman’s Supper.
Dukeries u3a continued to meet online during COVID restrictions but as the restrictions eased, they were pleased to start two new groups which met outdoors, the Bowling Group and the Gardening Group. Bowlers meet every fortnight at the Ollerton Bowling Club and hope to move to an indoor green during the winter months.
In July, the Gardening Group visited the Oasis Community Garden in Worksop, where they learnt about the development of the buildings and garden. A repeat visit is planned for the spring. Future visits in September will be to the Pure Land Japanese Garden Lantern Evening and Norwell Gardens.
The Photography Group had the opportunity to visit the Pumping Station near Walesby, where the manager allowed them to wander around the building and photograph anything that took their fancy. Tony, the group leader, then shared constructive feedback on the photos in the Dukeries u3a newsletter ‘Staying Connected’.
Members enjoyed fine weather for their second informal stroll and picnic, held at Rufford Park in early August. This event looks likely to be a regular occasion in the future. Later in the month, Dukeries u3a will hold their members’ garden party at the Jubilee Hall, Ollerton, a chance for everybody to greet friends again.
The programme of indoor activities has also started with Bridge, Mahjong, Tuesday and Sunday lunch clubs, Rummikubs, Uke ‘n’ Sing and Watercolour painting. Sewing and Scrabble are planned to start in September.
The September members’ meeting will bring back ‘Fool’s Gold’ who will perform their musical presentation ‘Old King Coal’. Dukeries u3a hope this will be their first ‘in person’ appearance since lockdowns began.
Dukeries u3a’s motto is ‘Learn, Laugh, Live’.
