Dukeries u3a is looking ahead to a new year of learning, laughing and living. A new events sub-committee has been putting together a fun programme to complement the monthly members’ meetings and various activity groups. Members can look forward to celebrating the Chinese New Year, a Murder Mystery Weekend and a River Trent cruise. More quizzes and beetle drives are also in the pipeline.
This month’s ‘Group of the Month’ is the Knit’n’Natter’ group. This is a small, very friendly, informal group who love putting their collective creative talents to the test in a number of projects including knitting for the Battersea Dog and Cats’ home, making hats for newborn babies in Kings Mill Neo-Natal Unit and creating ‘Memory Sleeves’ for Alzheimer’s patients. They have just completed knitting mini-hats and stockings for sale at Christmas, with all monies received going to the Dukeries u3a members’ charity, the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance. This will help towards reaching the members’ £5,000 target before the end of 2023. The Knit’n’Natter group are also about to deliver hats and scarves for the homeless to Emmanuel House in Nottingham. The group meets on the third Friday of each month.
The Ramblers had fine though cold weather to explore two different walks starting at Ransom Wood and found the Forest Stone, which is inscribed with all the old names of the local villages. Meanwhile, the Whatsapp Walkers stayed closer to home with a lovely frosty walk around Vicar Water at Clipstone. The Photography group has a few vacancies. If you would like to showcase your photographs or learn more about photography please go along on the fourth Friday each month.
January’s speaker is former pop star Vince Eager. In an illustrated presentation Vince will recall the heady days when, as a major pop star in the late 1950s and 60s, he appeared on prime time television most Saturday evenings on such shows as the ‘Six Five Special’, ‘Drumbeat’ and ‘Oh Boy’. The meeting is on Monday 15th January 2024 at Jubilee Hall, Wellow Road, Ollerton; doors open at 12.30pm.
