November’s guest speaker will be Glyn Brown, a Notts policeman who was selected from thousands of applicants to do a tour of duty in the Bahamas police force. He won an award for bravery when on constabulary duties there.

Glyn promises audience participation with his presentation on his time with the Bahamian force at the Dukeries u3a (Du3a) members meeting at Jubilee Hall, Ollerton on Monday 20th November, 1.30pm. Non-members are welcome and £1.00 buys a brew and biscuit if desired.

Dukeries u3a’s nominated charity, Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance, has received a running total of £4,735 as at the latest tally; thanks to the generosity of members. Led by the unstinting efforts of charity coordinator Pam Hardwick, members hope to achieve their new target of £5,000 soon.

Cohorts of u3a members helped populate the ranks of the performers at St Paulinus Church at a singalong event in aid of charity action, which distributes food where needed locally. The Jubilee Ukulele Group, Dukeries Singers and Edwinstowe Handbell Ringers admirably entertained the audience!

The Du3a History Group was entertained and educated by a guided tour of the Military Museum at Thoresby Park recently. The museum houses collections of militaria of the Royal Lancers, the South Notts Hussars and the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry. Spanning the years from 1661 to the present-day, lots of exhibits made for a very interesting day for the group. A 62-ton Conqueror heavy tank now stands outside Thoresby Park quadrangle.

Bats and broomsticks were seen flying at the Halloween Fancy Dress Party held at Clipstone Community and Social Club with dancing to live band (The Moonshiners) and ‘ghouls’ in abundance.

Looking ahead, upcoming events at Dukeries u3a include:

  • 11th November – Night at the Proms, with brass band and dining
  • 24th November – Quiz Night and supper
  • 18th December – Members Christmas celebration
  • 8th February – Chinese New Year celebrations in Calverton
  • Also planned is a Beetle Drive and a Murder Mystery Night in early 2024.
