Dukeries u3a is looking forward to special events this year. 2022 marks the 30th birthday of the group and celebrations start with a picnic at RSPB Sherwood Forest on Sunday 8th May, joining with visitors to enjoy musical entertainments. Dukeries u3a will be having its promotion table at the event to show visitors what they do.

The members’ Annual General Meeting on 16th May will include a birthday celebration and cakes. They will also welcome two guest speakers – Andy Oxnard, Community Engagement and Development Co-ordinator, and Lee Brazier, local councillor – plus some surprise entertainment.

The Allsorts Gardening Group has organised a street party in Jubilee Hall to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on 4th June (1950s dress optional!). Later on, in September, Dukeries u3a will be taking part in the festival week running throughout the country to celebrate the 40th anniversary of u3a in the UK.

The activity and interest groups continue to run and the Green Bowling Club started its summer season on 20th April. Now the weather and Covid situation are improving there are lots of trips in the pipeline, which started with Newark Garden Show in April. The photography group had a very interesting visit to Clipstone Headstocks, where they enjoyed a guided tour and were able to take plenty of evocative photographs. The Ramblers walked the Clipstone Drive, the site of a motorcycle land speed record early in the last century. Their next walk took them on the Kirton Loop through springtime woodland. The Tuesday lunch club appreciated an excellent lunch at the Forest Lodge, Edwinstowe.

The monthly speaker in June is Mike Ogden taking the members on ‘The Slow Road’ – an illustrated narrowboat cruise on England’s inland waterway system from the tidal Trent via London and Oxford to Birmingham’s Gas Street Basin. Mike lived on a narrowboat for many years.

Do you have an interest or skill you would be happy to share, or would you like to learn and enjoy an activity? Dukeries u3a has a varied calendar of activities and interests, however there is always room for new subjects in their programme. You can join online or in person at a monthly members’ meeting, which takes place at the Jubilee Hall, Wellow Road, Ollerton on the third Monday of the month at 1.00pm.

Dukeries u3a follows the u3a motto ‘Learn, Laugh, Live’. They have 149 members drawn from Ollerton, Edwinstowe and the surrounding villages. For further information visit www.u3asites.org.uk/dukeries, or contact chairperson Leslye on 07756 436177 or du3achair2020@gmail.com.
