On Saturday 6th September at 6.00pm, the Lifespring Centre in Ollerton came alive with the sound of music as The Dukeries Singers presented an evening of song, spirit and community. Under the direction of Musical Director John Pope and accompanied by Susan Bennett, the choir took the audience on a musical journey spanning genres, generations and emotions. From the uplifting opening number Rise Up with Music to the finale featuring selections from Les Misérables, the concert was a feast for the ears and the heart.
The programme was a blend of beloved classics and contemporary favourites, including Hallelujah, What a Wonderful World, Anthem and For the Beauty of the Earth. Listeners were enchanted by the gentle beauty of The Seal Lullaby, moved by You Raise Me Up, and delighted by the jazzy charm of Rags to Ritz, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore and Blue Moon. A highlight was the quartet of Penny Woolley, Ann-Marie Argile, Jane Richardson and Elizabeth Winter, who performed a moving arrangement of I Know Him So Well.
The concert also featured guest performances, including rock and roll numbers by guitarist Ashley Argile, the rich tones of contralto Sarah Prothero, and a festive contribution from the Edwinstowe Hand Bell Ringers. More than just a musical event, the concert was a celebration of community and compassion. Proceeds went to the local food bank, supporting those in need and reminding everyone of the power of music to bring people together.
Whether a long-time supporter of The Dukeries Singers or discovering them for the first time, all who attended enjoyed a memorable evening and left with hearts full.
