A bumper crop of Nottinghamshire gardens open to visitors in May!

May is a busy time for the Nottinghamshire National Garden Scheme as 16 gardens are open and welcoming visitors. May also coincides with their ‘Gardens and Health Week’ which runs from 11th to 19th May, the aim of which is to encourage people to visit a private garden as an act of self-care.

As George Plumtree, Chief Executive of the National Garden Scheme explains: “Visiting a National Garden Scheme beautiful garden is an incredibly restorative, calming and enjoyable experience, enhancing wellbeing and relieving stress.” The National Garden Scheme is also well known for providing wonderful refreshments for garden visitors, no visit would be complete without tea and a slice of cake!

Long Acres
Syerston NG23 5NA
Sunday 5th May, 1.00pm to 5.00pm
New garden for 2019, this large mature cottage garden includes an atmospheric walled garden and is especially lovely in spring with an abundance of tulips, narcissi, bluebells, exchordia and clematis to enjoy. The Norman village church will be open too. Wheelchair access, plants for sale, refreshments.

The Old Vicarage
Halam Hill, Halam NG22 8AX
Monday 6th May, 12.00pm to 4.00pm
Celebrating 17 years opening for the National Garden Scheme, this much loved English country garden features unusual plants and trees with excellent design/texture and colour, beautiful 12th century church will also be open a short walk away. Dog friendly, plants for sale, parking and refreshments.

Bridge Farm
Norwell Woodhouse NG23 6NG
Sunday 12th May, 1.00pm to 4.00pm
New garden for 2019, this is a large country garden and is still developing. It features a contemporary swimming pond with tranquil decking area, and a wide variety of plants providing flower and foliage colour year-round. Open views and peaceful setting. Wheelchair access, plants for sale, refreshments.

Ivy Bank Cottage
The Green, South Clifton NG23 7AG
Sunday 19th May, 1.00pm to 5.00pm
A traditional cottage garden with herbaceous borders, including a Nottinghamshire Medlar tree, a stumpery, a troughery, many original features and additional appeal for children who can search for animal models in the garden. Plants for sale, refreshments.

Norwell Nurseries
Woodhouse Road, Norwell NG23 6JX
Sunday 19th May, 2.00pm to 5.00pm
Jewel box of over 2,500 different beautiful and unusual plants set in a one acre plantsman’s garden, with feature Mediterranean, North American and alpine gardens. Nationally renowned nursery open with over 1,000 plants for sale. Some wheelchair access, plants for sale, refreshments, parking and National Plant Collection.

Halam Gardens and Wildflower Meadow

Monday 27th May, 1.00pm to 5.00pm
Three gardens, Hill Farm House, Hill’s Farm and The Old Vicarage provide a lovely mix of rural plant lovers’ gardens, including a six-acre wildflower meadow; a small wrap around cottage garden and a much loved plant-woman’s garden. Wheelchair access, dog friendly, plants for sale, parking, refreshments. 12th century church, open in Halam Village.

Holmes Villa
Holmes Lane, Walkeringham, Gainsborough DN10 4JP
Monday 27th May, 12.00pm to 4.00pm
Large plant-woman’s garden filled with unusual shrubs and perennial planting with all year-round interest, set in open countryside with many different areas to sit and enjoy. Wheelchair access, plants for sale, parking, refreshments.
