The Retford Archaeological Metal Detecting Group is now based at St Michael’s Church, Community Hall, Rectory Road, off Bridgegate, Retford DN22 7AY.

The group meets at 7.30pm on the first Thursday evening of every month. New members are welcome, with a £2.00 entrance fee to cover rent. The group is working to organise a few speakers in addition to the usual finds sharing and social evening. Members are encouraged to bring along their latest finds, including metal and pottery items, and participate in discussions on local history. Tea and coffee are provided.

Appeal to local farmers and landowners

Have you ever wondered what secrets the land you walk on every day might hold? The Retford Archaeological Metal Detecting Group, consisting of metal detectorists, archaeologists, and environmentalists, is keen to uncover the area’s rich history. They seek permission to conduct field walking (non-invasive) to find pottery artifacts on the surface or use metal detectors to locate metallic artefacts hidden below ground.

Farmers and landowners are invited to help build a picture of their land’s historical use over the centuries. The group typically works in teams of two, with all members registered with the National Council of Metal Detecting. Landowners are encouraged to verify the credentials of group members before granting access to their land.

All finds are presented to the landowner before being reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme Recorder. In the unlikely event that a treasure trove or hoard is discovered, the standard 50 / 50 split between landowner and finder applies.
