Doncaster artist Rosemary Firth will be exhibiting her latest work at Cath Ray Gallery and Studios, 58b Bridgegate, Retford this autumn. The exhibition features mixed-media collages and collographic prints inspired by landscapes she has visited and the colours of the changing seasons. See it from Saturday 5th September to Saturday 31st October.
Rosemary’s work has been exhibited throughout the UK and she appeared on Sky Arts’ Landscape Artist of the Year in 2020. As one of the pod artists in Series 6, Episode 2, her collage of the lake and music temple took her through to the final three selected artists. Although working outdoors highlighted the challenges of creating collages on location, it reinforced her passion for the medium. Known for richly textured and detailed artwork, Rosemary draws inspiration from the dramatic scenery of Derbyshire, North Yorkshire and the Lake District. The exhibition includes pieces based on visits to Ingleton Waterfalls and the Longshaw Estate. Speaking about her inspiration, Rosemary said: “My particular interest is rocks and water. Having studied geology a few years ago, I am still drawn to rocks and boulders. Their colours, textures, smell and feel excite me, as does their composition and the fact that they are millions of years old.”
After completing a Fine Art degree in Hull, Rosemary spent 16 years teaching art in secondary schools before establishing her own gallery in Doncaster, where she ran exhibitions and classes in drawing, painting and textiles. Now retired, she focuses primarily on her own artwork while continuing to teach and lead occasional workshops. During the exhibition, Rosemary will also host two workshops at the gallery. One will explore her much-loved collage techniques, while the other is a full-day collograph printing workshop. Participants will create a printing plate using card, paper and other materials before producing a series of prints from their finished design.
