We’ve all done it. The toaster stops toasting, the zip on a favourite coat gives up, the lamp flickers once and dies – and off it goes to the tip. From this autumn, Retford has another option.
The Retford Repair Café opens on Saturday 31st October, 11.00am to 1.00pm, at The Well in Retford, who have very kindly provided the venue to help the project get off the ground. It’s free to attend and run entirely by local volunteers.
Take along something broken – a small electrical item, clothing, electronics, a toy, a piece of furniture – and one of their repairers will have a go at fixing it. Settle in with a tea or coffee while you wait, or pull up a chair alongside them and pick up a new skill.
The idea is a simple one: less waste, more skills, and a friendlier town. Donations for items mended are welcome to help cover running costs. If they can’t fix it then they will know someone who can as they’re building a directory of local repairers who will be able to help. If you mend things for a living and would like to be included, do please get in touch.
They’d love more helpers, too. If you can fix things they’d be delighted to hear from you. They also need welcomers, tea-makers, and people to lend a hand with admin, publicity and social media. Give as much or as little time as you can spare.
The project will also be promoting crafters who upcycle so if you make new things out of old ones then please get in touch or go along.
