Retford Community Singers suspended live sessions in March, but about 25 members have met online every fortnight which has been great for keeping in contact and has allowed members to continue to do what they love. Singing aloud in harmony with like minded people is even more necessary in these highly unusual times and members have been very grateful to their leader, Janet, for encouraging them to keep going. At the time of writing, the choir have plans to produce a couple of video recordings, which will be available on their website in due course. One song will be ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’, to honour the visual symbol of renewal and hope which has been such a feature of the last few months. The other choice is the African hymn ‘Sithi Schwele’, with wonderful harmonies from the choir intertwined with solo voices which take this number to another level. They are hoping to have a video link with a Zimbabwean friend of the choir adding his bass voice to the solo line. It promises to be a remarkable link up – so long as the technology allows!
It’s uncertain when they will be able to restart the regular choir, but they are still here – check out their website, www.retfordcommunitysingers.com, to keep in touch or find them on Facebook.
