In Sam’s Name are committed to helping improve men’s mental health in the Nottinghamshire and Bassetlaw areas. They have created the In Sam’s Name Angling Club, giving guys a safe space with likeminded others where they can feel no judgement.
As fishing is an outdoor sport, it is hoped it will encourage men to get out into the fresh air and be amongst nature. It is a very calm and relaxing atmosphere to be in, which the volunteers think will have a positive impact on mental health.
The club is open to men over the age of 18 and all levels of ability. The charity has secured funding which will allow them to provide basic equipment to anyone who would like to try fishing for the first time. They also have funding to cover the costs of an individual’s first two visits, so you can see what you think without any cost. Experienced anglers have already offered help teach basic skills, as they too are aware of the positive impact fishing can have.
Bank side, they will have the facilities to provide a hot drink and snacks.
As with all of In Sam’s Name’s support groups, there is no pressure to talk, just turn up and have a fish.
The Club are based in the Mansfield area, and they work in collaboration with local fisheries. They are lucky to have some great facilities locally and they have seen fantastic offers of support from local businesses, especially local fishing tackle shop Hooked on Fishing in Mansfield.
