Are you struggling to pay your Council Tax?

The annual Council Tax bills for the 2025-26 year have recently been issued by the District Council. Council Tax payments fund local services, including schools, adult and children’s services, the police and fire services, and many local council services such as housing, benefits, and refuse collections. Payments can be made in 10 or 12 monthly instalments.

You may be eligible for a reduction in your Council Tax bill

In addition to Government discount schemes such as single occupier or disability discounts, individuals may be entitled to a further reduction in their Council Tax bill, known as Council Tax Reduction.

What is Council Tax Reduction?

The District Council operates a local discount scheme to support working-age individuals on low incomes or in receipt of certain welfare benefits to afford their Council Tax. Households with at least one person of pensionable age fall under the Government’s Council Tax Reduction scheme, which is means-tested and takes into account age, household income, and savings. For working-age households, the maximum Council Tax Reduction that can be awarded is 90% of the Council Tax bill, depending on household income and circumstances.

Claiming Council Tax Reduction follows the same process regardless of age category. Citizens Advice North Nottinghamshire can assist in checking eligibility and, if applicable, help complete the online form. It is a straightforward process.
