The Dukeries Singers has premiered a specially commissioned song celebrating the history, people and identity of Ollerton. The piece, Where We Stand, was commissioned through the support of Live & Local and Newark and Sherwood District Council, and was first performed during the St George’s Day celebrations in Ollerton on Sunday 26th April.
Written by singer-songwriter Amy Kakoura, the song reflects on Ollerton’s heritage, weaving together stories of industry, community, family life and the changing landscape of the area. References to the River Maun, local industries and generations of working families help create what the choir describes as a moving and authentic portrait of the town and its people.
The premiere performance was made even more special by the attendance of Amy Kakoura herself, who joined the choir to perform the work. The Dukeries Singers said the piece captures a strong sense of shared identity while recognising the importance of history, change and community spirit. The choir has thanked Live & Local for commissioning the work and expressed its gratitude to Amy Kakoura for creating what it describes as a thoughtful and deeply resonant composition.
Where We Stand will now form part of the choir’s forthcoming concert programme alongside a selection of music from musicals through the years. The performances will also feature two guest flautists and a saxophone instrumental performance.
Upcoming concerts will take place on Saturday 6th June at 2.30pm at Edwinstowe Village Hall and on Saturday 13th June at 2.30pm at Jubilee Hall in Ollerton.
