Longer days, shorter nights and the prospect of warmer, drier weather are encouraging Dukeries u3a members to get out and about after a long winter. One of the highlights this spring has been the Jugs Jamboree on Thursday 19th March at the John Fretwell Centre near Mansfield, where ukulele players from across the region joined the Dukeries Jubilee Ukulele Group for a day of enthusiastic music-making using the Jamboree Song Book. The event also featured an open mic session with performances from soloists and small groups. In total, £1,300.00 was raised for the John Fretwell Complex and John Eastwood Hospice. It was even said that the spirit of George Formby seemed to be looking on approvingly.
Back at Jubilee Hall, Leslye and the Events Committee hosted a successful Irish social night to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. It was a colourful evening, with members embracing the theme through costumes, hats and beards. Entertainment throughout the night included a light-hearted paper aeroplane competition, where participants designed, decorated and tested how far their creations could fly.
Continuing the St Patrick’s theme, the Ramblers group enjoyed a walk around the Derwent Dams in unusually mild weather. It was their warmest walk for some time. Attempts to play the Dambusters theme at Ladybower Dam were unsuccessful due to a lack of mobile signal, but the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
The u3a movement offers a great way to make new friends, socialise and learn new skills. Dukeries u3a is open to all adults, regardless of employment status. Membership costs £20.00 per person and includes access to all activities and interest groups for the year, including those within the North Notts Neighbourhood Group.
Anyone interested is welcome to attend up to two meetings, held on the third Monday of each month, from 12.30pm to 3.00pm. A £1.00 contribution is requested to cover refreshments.
