Dukeries u3a

Taking full advantage of the glorious August weather, the Dukeries u3a Ramblers enjoyed a familiar favourite – a walk around Newstead Abbey Park, finishing at a café in Linby for coffee, cake and a chat. Their second walk of the month coincided with Kate Hall’s birthday, when she was surprised by a magnificent picnic organised by her fellow ramblers at the top of Thoresby Vale Country Park.

The highlight of August was the Big Members’ Event – a Back to the Sixties afternoon, masterminded by Leslye Henstock and the Events Committee. Culinary Delights of Edwinstowe provided lunch – a ploughman’s platter followed by apple crumble and custard – before the main entertainment: a show based on the original Juke Box Jury format. First broadcast in the 1960s and compered by David Jacobs in its early years, the show featured a panel who decided whether a song was a ‘hit’ or a ‘miss’.

The MC for the afternoon was Roger from Leicestershire, who built his own Juke Box Jury set during Covid. On the jury were u3a members Lisbeth Greenland, Richard Titmuss, Ann Hill and Tony Brewer, who judged songs by The Big Bopper, The Beach Boys, The Dubliners, Anthony Newley (with Wendy Richard) and Canned Heat, among others. The music stirred many memories and the jury’s comments were often hilarious. A great time was had by all.

The u3a movement offers opportunities to make new friends, socialise and learn something new. Dukeries u3a is open to all adults, irrespective of employment status, with plenty of activities and interest groups, including those of the North Notts Neighbourhood Group. Membership is £20.00 per person until 31st March 2026 and includes access to all groups and activities.

Visitors are welcome to attend up to two monthly meetings before deciding to join. Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month from 12.30pm to 3.00pm, with a £1.00 charge to cover refreshments.
