Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum’s volunteers were very busy in September. They enjoyed a day out at Rainworth Pétanque Club on 6th September, where they met lots of new people and sold a lot of their toys, knitted by Jennifer, raising funds for the museum. There was also the Pleasley Pit Open Day on the 14th, where they met up with mining colleagues and caught up with all the gossip.
The Museum also hosted the Newark and Sherwood ‘Open Doors Day’ on 21st September, with Thoresby Colliery Band, when activities included drumming by the local Scouts group. On the 27th volunteers were at the Southwell Ploughing Match, always a very enjoyable day with lots going on and a good opportunity to make new friends and raise funds for the museum. So far, October is looking quieter as far as booking go but the Museum’s visitor numbers are going up! They will be hosting King’s Clipstone History Group on Wednesday 15th October for an evening visit and are very much looking forward to showing them around their surprising museum and getting the usual reaction: “Wow, I didn’t expect that!”
The October Wellbeing Walk, held in conjunction with Lincolnshire Co-op, will take place on Friday 31st October. The walks last 60 to 90 minutes and cover various routes around the village, depending on the weather. Meet at 10.00am outside the museum. Well-behaved dogs are very welcome to join in, although Boris may tempt them into a dip in the finger ponds if they take that route, or even a large puddle, which is just as much fun! As well as supporting Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum by buying Newark and Sherwood Community Lottery tickets, you can now buy tickets for the Robin Hood Lottery too. They rely on donations to stay open and are entirely volunteer run, so these lottery funds really help and you have the chance of winning up to £25,000 too. Thank-you to all of the Museum’s volunteers and supporters, without whom they could not continue keeping Nottinghamshire’s mining heritage alive.
