Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum has hosted a number of group and school visits during July and also had stalls at Caunton Summer Fair and the Teversal ‘Step Back in Time’ event. The museum has once again entered the Nottinghamshire Tourism Awards and is hoping to win gold this year. Volunteers have been very active, hosting both school and group visits, as well as welcoming East Midlands Today, who filmed a segment about the 10th anniversary of the closure of Thoresby Colliery. Fred, the museum’s mining mascot, has also been busy taking selfies around the museum.

The Wellbeing Walks, organised in conjunction with Lincolnshire Co-op, continue to be popular with both walkers and their dogs. Participants enjoy a variety of routes around Bilsthorpe, appreciating the birdsong and countryside views. A Mini Hike took place on Friday 4th July and raised approximately £50.00 for Macmillan Cancer Support. There were 12 walkers and 2 dogs, with a stop at the Daffodil Café in Eakring before returning to the museum.

On Sunday 14th September, the museum will be present at Pleasley Open Day, and on Sunday 21st September it will host an Arts Council England ‘Open Doors’ event in collaboration with Newark and Sherwood District Council. Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum will also attend the Southwell Ploughing Match on Saturday 27th September. The museum will be open on Sunday 17th and Monday 18th August to commemorate the 1993 disaster at Bilsthorpe, when three miners tragically lost their lives in a roof fall. The Autumn Fundraising Coffee Morning will take place on Saturday 20th September, featuring all the usual stalls, including homemade cakes, a raffle and a tombola. Funds are also supported by the Newark and Sherwood Community Lottery, which donates a percentage of ticket sales to local charities.
