The ladies of the Major Oak Pop Choir have been busy recently doing their usual thing of raising lots of money for local charities.
Leading up to Christmas 2024, they held concerts at St Wilfrid’s Church, Kirkby in Ashfield (supporting the church and the Children’s Bereavement Centre, Newark), they performed at the annual Edwinstowe Christmas Lights Switch-on, and had a spectacular Christmas concert to a capacity audience at the John Fretwell Centre (supporting the Eve appeal). More recently in March, they sang at the Hostess Restaurant at the 80th anniversary luncheon of the Sutton Inner Wheel. Through these performances, the choir raised a total of just over £5,000 for local charities.
2025 is incredibly special for the choir, as it marks the 10th anniversary of the Major Oak Pop Choir, and they recently celebrated this momentous occasion together – with cake, kindly baked by one of the choir members, Jane Young. Founded by Edwinstowe resident, Pauline Daglish, it really doesn’t seem that long ago since the choir’s very first rehearsal, when 20 ladies turned up to see what it was all about.
Membership very quickly increased to an incredible 80 members, and this number has remained constant throughout the last 10 years, with a healthy waiting list of prospective members. (Fun fact – the reason they have a cap on 80 members is because there are only 80 chairs in Edwinstowe Church Rooms, where they rehearse!) Over the last 10 years, the ladies in the choir are extremely proud of the fact that they have raised almost £80,000 for local charities. Well done to everyone involved – what a tremendous achievement!
Preparations are now underway for an exciting summer performance on Sunday 6th July, when will be singing to support cancer services at Kings Mill Hospital. As usual, the choir will be singing a ‘feel-good’ programme of songs from film, musicals and popular song, all of which celebrate the power of love and friendship. Why not go along and support your local Edwinstowe choir? They guarantee you an uplifting and toe-tapping experience, and you will help them to raise even more money for a very worthy cause.
This concerts takes place on Sunday 6th July at Mansfield Civic Centre. Doors open at 5.15pm and the concert starts at 6.00pm Tickets cost £10.00 and are available from the Community Involvement Hub at Kings Mill Hospital, or by contacting 01623 676011 or sfh-tr.charity@nhs.net.
