April was a busy month at Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum, with an increase in visitor numbers, visits to schools, and the ever-popular Coffee Morning. The event was well attended, and the team extends their thanks to everyone who supported them on the day – including Sir Mark Spencer and his wife, who joined them for coffee and cake. New tables have now been installed in the visitor area, funded by a grant from Bilsthorpe Parish Council.
Preparations are now underway for the Summer Coffee Morning, which will be held at the museum on Cross Street on Saturday 21st June.
A kind email was received from Kneesall C of E Primary School expressing how much the children enjoyed their visit from Alan, an ex-miner. The children were delightful and very engaged during his talk, asking many questions. More school visits are planned for June, along with trips to Ilkeston Vintage Engine and Tractor Club and Ravenshead u3a.
As part of the VE Day celebrations, the museum raised the flag in partnership with the Parish Council on Thursday 8th May at 9.30am.
The Wellbeing Walks continue to grow in popularity with both walkers and their dogs. On the most recent walk, around the fishing lake, two of the dogs thoroughly enjoyed splashing in the ponds. Walks take place on the last Friday of each month.
The museum is still seeking volunteers to help with the Bilsthorpe Miners Memorial Garden. With the weather improving, it is time to begin summer planting. Anyone interested in helping is encouraged to get in touch by telephoning 01623 871533 or 07443 439499, or emailing bilsthorpe_heritage@yahoo.com.
Supporters can also help by taking part in the Newark and Sherwood Community Lottery. Tickets are £1 each and participants have the chance to win up to £25,000 – one supporter has already won £2,000. Monthly prize draws are also held.
The museum can be found on Facebook, Instagram, and at www.bilsthorpemuseum.co.uk, or contacted by email at bilsthorpe_heritage@yahoo.com.
